Happiness is cherry blossoms abloom against the bustling backdrop of Washington, D.C. Happiness is when I'm surrounded by bawdy family members at a French cafe, giving each other shoulder massages and ordering too much food. Happiness is making cheddar jalapeno biscuits on a Thursday afternoon. Happiness is having friends who come up for beer, nachos and "When Harry Met Sally" on a week night. Happiness is being picked up at the airport at 5:10 a.m., on a Saturday morning. Happiness is finding time to appreciate being home.
But for some of my kiddies, happiness is not being home. Happiness is not being with family. Happiness is hiding out at school, falling asleep in class and avoiding drunken family members at all cost. Happiness is when the kitchen gives you second helpings for lunch. Happiness is somewhere other than here.
Hi Miss Shyu, I am a teacher at a Christian day school in Cedar Crest, NM and I loved reading your blog. I grew up on the Mescalero Apache Res. near Ruidoso, NM. Your students comments and antics sure brought back some great memories for me. Keep writing and hang in there. Sounds like you're doing great work. God Bless, Gina
